Chime, a financial technology company offering accessible financial services, is hiring a remote Director Engineering to head up the AI & App Experience group. This division oversees the Jade AI assistant, backend AI infrastructure, core app features, and the design system.
This position fits a technical leader experienced in scaling AI-driven consumer software and guiding engineering managers. The selected individual will formulate multi-quarter strategies, establish technical directions, and collaborate closely with product, design, data science, and risk teams. Candidates should expect to balance high-level architectural oversight with direct team mentorship.
Responsibilities
- Formulate multi-quarter engineering strategies for the AAX organization alongside product leadership
- Recruit, direct, and develop technical management and senior individual contributors
- Establish architectural direction and technical standards for AI-powered consumer features
- Drive an AI-native engineering culture that prioritizes safe and scalable LLM deployments
- Collaborate with product, design, data science, and risk departments to shape long-range plans
- Represent engineering in executive and cross-functional forums
- Maintain robust operational standards including on-call rotations, monitoring, and incident management
- Contribute to wider company engineering initiatives as part of the leadership team
Requirements
- Over 10 years of professional software engineering experience
- Minimum 5 years managing engineering managers or multi-team organizations
- Proven background in building and scaling AI or LLM-driven consumer applications
- Experience hiring, mentoring, and retaining engineering leaders and senior ICs
- Technical foundation in areas such as React Native, Python or Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, and distributed systems
- Demonstrated ability to convert strategy into multi-quarter engineering roadmaps
- Strong executive communication skills with cross-functional partners
Qualifications
- Background working alongside product, design, data science, and risk or compliance teams within a regulated or high-trust environment
- Prior fintech sector experience
