Job Description
Instacart operates an essential delivery service connecting customers with grocery and household goods while providing flexible earnings opportunities for personal shoppers. The company is currently hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Orders Platform to lead foundational platform engineering efforts remotely on a full-time basis.
This role serves as the central orchestration layer for commerce across the entire ecosystem, coordinating order lifecycles among customers, shoppers, retailers, payment gateways, and fulfillment networks. The position suits an experienced systems architect who enjoys driving multi-team projects, designing durable large-scale transaction systems, and solving complex technical challenges.
The engineer in this role will build and refine event-driven, idempotent workflows that process hundreds of millions of transactions annually. Responsibilities include defining technical strategy for order state machines, ensuring strong data consistency, modernizing multi-tenant abstractions, and developing platform capabilities that support automated agentic commerce. Collaboration across engineering, product, data, infrastructure, and business units is essential.
Instacart functions as a Flex First organization, allowing team members to choose whether they operate from home, an office, or another location while participating in periodic in-person gatherings.
Responsibilities
- Lead engineering initiatives across multiple teams to enhance reliability, scalability, and correctness throughout the order lifecycle.
- Formulate and execute technical strategies for order state management, service contracts, and data integrity.
- Design and scale event-driven, idempotent workflows covering order creation, modifications, cancellations, payments, and refunds.
- Collaborate closely with payment, fulfillment, catalog, advertising, fraud prevention, data, and infrastructure departments.
- Modernize platform features through improved consistency models, multi-tenant abstractions, and fault isolation.
- Create platform capabilities supporting policy-driven automated workflows and secure APIs for agentic commerce and AI tools.
- Guide technical direction by conducting design reviews, mentoring team members, and writing critical code.
Requirements
- Over 10 years of professional background designing, building, and running large-scale backend or platform infrastructure in production.
- Demonstrated history of guiding complex technical projects end-to-end from architecture through rollout and operation.
- Solid expertise in distributed architectures, service-oriented systems, high-volume APIs, event patterns, and idempotent workflows.
- Proficiency in at least one backend language such as Go, Python, or Java.
- Production experience working with relational and NoSQL databases.
- Operational background managing critical services, handling on-call duties, maintaining error budgets, and conducting post-incident reviews.
- Practical utilization of AI-assisted development tooling to boost design, coding, and review processes.
- Strong communication abilities to align technical goals with senior engineers, product managers, and cross-functional stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Bachelor or Master degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Background in developing high-integrity transactional systems like payments, logistics, or orders.
- Expertise in asynchronous architectures and message brokers such as Kafka or Google Cloud Pub/Sub.
- Experience integrating internal services and external partners with clear API contracts and operational readiness.
- Track record of constructing multi-tenant extensible platforms for onboarding new product flows and payment types.
- Proficiency in observability practices, metrics, tracing, alerting, circuit breaking, and chaos engineering.
- Familiarity with secure-by-default service design, tokenization, secrets management, PCI compliance, and PII regulations.
- Interest in applying AI and agentic design patterns safely to platform engineering.
