Job Description

Instacart operates an essential grocery delivery service connecting customers with household goods while offering earnings opportunities for personal shoppers. The company is currently hiring a remote Senior Data Scientist I to lead the Meals initiative, which ranks among the top strategic priorities for 2027.

This position centers on scaling data science operations following the MVP launch, placing heavy emphasis on metric tracking and experimentation. The selected professional will steer engagement, user activations, and reactivations for a high-visibility, 0 to 1 product area. Working alongside Product, Engineering, and Design teams, the individual in this role will shape product direction and define long-term success at scale.

Instacart follows a Flex First model, allowing personnel to select their preferred working environment, whether from home, an office, or elsewhere, supplemented by in-person gatherings. Candidates must be permanently located in one of four Canadian provinces: Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, or Nova Scotia.

Responsibilities

  • Own the post-MVP scale-up of data science systems and infrastructure for the Meals initiative
  • Design, construct, and maintain metric tracking frameworks to evaluate the influence of Meals on user activation, engagement, and reactivation
  • Formulate and execute experimentation strategies ranging from hypothesis creation to analysis and final recommendations
  • Collaborate directly with Product Managers, Engineers, and Designers to align strategy and present insights based on data
  • Contribute to a 0 to 1 project at a pivotal growth stage to help establish success metrics at scale

Requirements

  • Demonstrated background in consumer-facing product data science working alongside Product Managers, Data Engineers, and Engineering Leads
  • Solid foundation in product and data analysis, statistical modeling, causal inference, and A/B experimentation
  • Track record of defining key performance indicators and optimizing product funnels for product-market fit
  • Strong communication skills to explain intricate technical findings to senior business and engineering leaders
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience within data science or a related domain
  • Bachelor degree in a quantitative discipline like Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • Must reside permanently in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, or Nova Scotia

Qualifications

  • Experience connecting offline evaluation metrics, such as NDCG, human evaluation, and precision or recall, with online tests and business results
  • Knowledge of causal inference methods outside standard A/B testing, including holdouts, difference-in-differences, and quasi-experiments
  • Demonstrated success improving instrumentation, logging, and metric definitions within complex data environments
  • History of introducing new features in fresh markets or executing 0 to 1 launches

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Highly market-competitive compensation package
