Zoox is seeking a Team Lead for Ground Operations to direct overnight fleet maintenance and mission readiness activities during the 3rd shift. This critical role focuses on maximizing vehicle uptime, optimizing repair workflows, and ensuring the fleet is fully prepared for daytime operations. The position suits an experienced technical leader capable of managing both staff and contractors in a dynamic environment.
The chosen candidate will supervise workshop personnel, handle technical escalations, and enforce safety standards. Responsibilities include overseeing software deployments, pre-mission checks, vehicle logistics, and data analysis to prevent future downtime. This position operates on-site with a fixed shift schedule from Sunday through Thursday, between 11:30 pm and 8:00 am.
Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, and mentor technical staff and contract personnel during the overnight shift
- Handle recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, and performance tracking for workshop personnel
- Identify operational bottlenecks and apply lean methodologies to streamline fleet readiness
- Oversee overnight vehicle maintenance, repairs, and rework activities to maximize daytime availability
- Act as the primary escalation point for complex technical challenges and enforce quality standards
- Analyze fleet data to support root cause analysis on vehicle and component issues
- Enforce safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and workshop cleanliness
- Manage software and firmware deployments for morning operations
- Direct vehicle intake, pre-mission checks, readiness checklists, and yard logistics
- Manually operate autonomous and auxiliary vehicles when necessary
- Coordinate operations across multiple sites within the geographic region
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on automotive technician experience
- 2+ years of people leadership or supervisory experience
- Willingness to work the 3rd overnight shift from Sunday to Thursday, 11:30 pm to 8:00 am
- Extensive knowledge of automotive maintenance methods, diagnostics, parts, and tools
- High proficiency in CAN/LIN architecture, wiring diagrams, and soldering
- Clean driving record
- Ability to travel locally and nationally up to 20%
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in a technical or business field
- Technical trade school certificate or Associate Degree in automotive repair
- Strong understanding of electric vehicle architecture and high-voltage systems
- Experience working in a fast-paced service environment
- Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies
