Zoox is seeking a Team Lead for Ground Operations to oversee overnight fleet maintenance, rework, and mission readiness activities during the 3rd shift. This position is vital for maximizing vehicle uptime and availability for daytime operations by optimizing workflows during low-demand overnight hours.
This technical leadership role suits someone with a strong background in automotive maintenance and personnel management who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The individual selected will direct a crew of vehicle technicians and readiness associates, act as a strategic partner to cross-functional departments, and cultivate a workshop culture centered on safety and accountability.
Core duties include managing employee schedules, monitoring key performance indicators, resolving complex technical problems, and enforcing health and safety protocols in compliance with OSHA standards. The schedule for this position is Sunday through Thursday from 11:30 PM to 8:00 AM.
Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, and mentor technical staff and contract personnel on the overnight shift
- Recruit, hire, onboard, and train workshop team members
- Create and manage employee and contractor schedules including time-off
- Track key performance indicators and provide consistent feedback to the crew
- Identify workflow bottlenecks and apply lean methodologies to improve operational efficiency
- Direct vehicle maintenance and rework activities during overnight hours
- Serve as the main point of escalation for complex technical problems
- Support the analysis, documentation, and reporting of fleet data for root cause analysis
- Enforce safety policies and maintain a clean, organized, hazard-free workshop
- Deploy correct software and firmware versions to vehicles ahead of morning operations
- Conduct pre-mission checks, vehicle ingest, and readiness checklists
- Manage vehicle logistics, storage, and movement to facilitate smooth shift handovers
- Manually operate autonomous and auxiliary vehicles for yard logistics
- Coordinate operations across multiple sites within the designated geographic area
Requirements
- Minimum of five years of hands-on automotive technician experience
- Minimum of two years of people leadership or supervisory experience
- Willingness and ability to work the 3rd shift overnight schedule
- Extensive expertise in automotive maintenance, diagnostics, parts, and tools
- High proficiency in CAN/LIN architecture, wiring diagrams, and soldering
- Ability to rapidly learn new technical subjects
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Capability to manage time, multitask, and prioritize in a fast-paced startup setting
- Clean driving record
- Ability to travel locally and nationally up to twenty percent of the time
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in a technical or business discipline
- Technical trade school certificate or Associate Degree in automotive repair
- Strong understanding of electric vehicle architecture and high-voltage systems
- Prior experience working in a fast-paced service environment
- Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement frameworks
