Gusto is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the Time and Scheduling product team in New York. Operating on a hybrid schedule, this full-time role involves building and maintaining customer-facing features utilized by small business owners and their employees. Gusto provides HR, payroll, 401(k), and health insurance services to over 500,000 small businesses nationwide. In this position, the engineer will manage the complete product lifecycle from initial design to post-launch iteration, working across both backend APIs and frontend components.
This role is well-suited for seasoned full-stack professionals who enjoy solving intricate engineering challenges and scaling large applications. Responsibilities
- Design, construct, and test core products within the Time domain
- Guide and mentor other engineers to address complex technical hurdles at scale
- Contribute to scaling large Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React codebases
- Partner with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering teams to identify customer needs and launch solutions
- Take ownership of products throughout their lifecycle, from early specifications to post-launch iteration
Requirements
- Have at least 8 years of software development experience
- Possess experience building scalable solutions that address customer pain points
- Bring experience with large-scale refactors, reliability issues, and performance optimization
- Demonstrate the ability to mentor engineers to enhance performance and impact
- Attend on-site onboarding and work from the New York office approximately two to three days per week
Qualifications
- Experience utilizing AI tools or systems to enhance testing, speed up development, and release new product features
- Background in or familiarity with Ruby on Rails
- Experience leading multi-quarter projects that solve challenging engineering problems at scale
