Gusto is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join its Tax Accounts team in New York. Operating on a hybrid schedule, this position involves designing systems and automation that manage tax account data, registrations, and agency compliance for hundreds of thousands of small businesses. Gusto provides HR, payroll, health insurance, and 401(k) services to over half a million nationwide clients, helping business owners maintain compliance and support their employees.

This role suits an experienced engineer who enjoys tackling intricate regulatory domains across the full product lifecycle. The position requires writing clean frontend code, building reliable backend APIs, and establishing data models that handle complex compliance rules. Team members are expected to engage actively with AI tools relevant to their work.

Responsibilities

  • Design, construct, and test backend systems and frontend interfaces for employer and employee tax accounts
  • Develop automation pipelines and data exchanges to maintain accurate tax agency access, rates, and deposit schedules
  • Model intricate jurisdiction-specific compliance rules into reliable and maintainable technical systems
  • Collaborate closely with product, design, tax operations, and PEO teams to develop solutions for compliance challenges
  • Mentor fellow engineers to improve performance, scale impact, and solve difficult problems at large scale
  • Engage actively with artificial intelligence tools and assist in scaling AI fluency safely across the team

Requirements

  • Demonstrated staff-level technical leadership with approximately 8 or more years of software development experience
  • Track record of owning multi-quarter projects that resolve complex engineering challenges with measurable customer impact
  • Demonstrated ability in building scalable applications focused on reliability, performance, and correctness
  • Experience designing application programming interfaces and data models for rules-heavy fields such as tax, compliance, or payments
  • Experience utilizing artificial intelligence systems to accelerate development and testing capabilities
  • Proven capability to mentor engineers and communicate effectively with business stakeholders
  • Ability to travel to a Gusto office for onboarding
