Job Description

Gusto provides human resources, payroll, 401(k), and health insurance services to more than half a million small businesses nationwide. The company is currently seeking a Staff Software Engineer for its Pricing and Packaging Engineering group based in the San Francisco office.

In this hybrid position, the chosen professional will architect and deliver internal commerce infrastructure components, including product catalogs, promotion engines, entitlement systems, and pricing experiment platforms. This role suits an engineer who enjoys high-stakes backend work, leading technical strategy across cross-functional groups, and collaborating with product and data science teams.

Day-to-day operations involve guiding the technical direction of commerce services, managing complex projects from conception to release, and using AI tools to boost development speed. Team members are expected to engage with relevant artificial intelligence tools. The position requires traveling to the office for onboarding and working on-site approximately two to three days each week.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical design and architecture for commerce platform components such as product catalogs, subscription systems, and promotion engines.
  • Partner with product management and engineering groups to establish technical roadmaps and encourage platform adoption.
  • Manage end-to-end delivery of complex, ambiguous projects through all phases from planning to post-launch iteration.
  • Mentor and develop engineering staff via technical coaching, code reviews, and design evaluations.
  • Utilize AI tools to increase engineering velocity and set team-wide standards for AI-assisted development.
  • Work alongside marketing and business teams to improve self-serve systems for managing promotions, discounts, and product bundles.

Requirements

  • Have at least 8 years of software development experience.
  • Possess deep background in building and running large-scale backend platform systems within commerce, subscription management, billing, pricing, or packaging.
  • Demonstrate experience owning multi-quarter projects that achieve measurable customer impact at scale.
  • Show strong proficiency in distributed systems, API design, and service reliability practices with experience defining SLOs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead cross-functional technical initiatives and align stakeholders around a unified technical vision.
  • Travel to the office for onboarding.
  • Work from the San Francisco office approximately two to three days per week.
