Job Description
Gusto operates a platform serving over half a million small businesses across the United States by managing payroll, employee health coverage, 401(k) plans, and human resources tasks. As part of a major strategic initiative, the company is expanding its Professional Employer Organization (PEO) product line, allowing the business to act as a co-employer and handle complex compliance and benefits administration.
The organization is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, PEO Growth to spearhead the entire customer acquisition and setup pipeline in San Francisco. In this capacity, you will guide how small business owners discover, adopt, and onboard onto the PEO offering, ensuring disparate features function as a single unified product.
This role fits engineers who excel at navigating ambiguity, collaborating across cross-functional pods, and applying artificial intelligence tools directly into daily coding workflows and product features. You will define technical roadmaps, establish metrics to monitor funnel performance, and elevate engineering standards in a heavily regulated domain where precision matters.

- Establish technical strategies by translating vague product goals into robust architectures and scalable abstractions.
- Collaborate across multiple application teams to connect various domains into a unified user journey and resolve ownership ambiguities.
- Integrate artificial intelligence into daily engineering duties including code generation, review, debugging, and exploration.
- Build AI-driven assistance features directly into the onboarding workflow to help customers resolve blockers independently.
- Instrument conversion funnels, define and track performance metrics, and utilize empirical experiments to drive product iterations.
- Maintain high engineering standards through thorough code reviews, testing protocols, observability improvements, and architectural judgment calls.
Requirements
- Possess at least eight years of professional software development experience.
- Demonstrate a history of owning customer-facing product features within large-scale production codebases.
- Exhibit strong full-stack engineering proficiency across mature server-side environments and modern component-based frontend architectures.
- Show active AI fluency by utilizing relevant tooling in everyday development work and understanding its practical strengths and limitations.
- Demonstrate high ownership and the ability to autonomously shape vague business demands into shipped software.
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails and React or TypeScript.
- Prior background working on growth systems, user funnels, conversion optimization, or plan configuration workflows.
