Job Description

Gusto is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join its PEO Benefits engineering team based out of New York under a hybrid work model. Gusto operates a platform supporting over half a million small businesses by managing payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and human resources. In this role, you will help build a Professional Employer Organization offering centered on a national Master Health Plan designed to reduce healthcare expenses for small business owners.

This position offers a greenfield engineering opportunity where you will establish foundational architecture rather than maintaining legacy software. Your work will span the complete product development lifecycle, involving both frontend implementation and backend API creation. You will collaborate closely with product management, design, data, and platform engineering teams to shape features from initial concept through deployment and continuous iteration.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned full-stack developer who enjoys tackling complex technical problems and mentoring fellow engineers. You should have experience driving multi-quarter, cross-functional projects through ambiguous requirements and actively engage with artificial intelligence tools to accelerate development workflows. Travel to a Gusto office for onboarding is mandatory.

  • Guide and mentor other engineering staff to resolve intricate technical challenges at scale
  • Contribute to scaling one of the largest JavaScript/React and Ruby/Rails applications globally
  • Partner with product, data, design, and platform teams to discover customer pain points, prototype solutions, and release products

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of professional software development experience
  • Demonstrated ability to own multi-quarter technical projects that deliver measurable customer impact
  • Track record of driving large cross-functional initiatives through ambiguity from scoping to execution
  • Familiarity with leveraging artificial intelligence systems to boost development speed, testing quality, and product capabilities
  • Background or interest in working with Ruby on Rails
  • Capability to write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code within a test-driven setting
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with engineering peers and business stakeholders
  • Ability to travel to a company office for onboarding
  • Availability to work from the New York office approximately two to three days per week

  • Three or more years of professional PEO experience, specifically building PEO workflows in high-growth environments
  • Demonstrated experimentation with emerging AI frameworks and sharing of best practices
