The company is currently hiring a Staff Software Engineer, HR Experience to join its engineering organization on a hybrid schedule out of the New York office.
This position is well-suited for an experienced technologist who can independently steer full-stack features from initial technical scoping through production deployment and monitoring. Team members at Gusto are expected to actively engage with artificial intelligence tools relevant to their daily responsibilities and expand their fluency as the technology progresses. The role involves working closely with product management and design colleagues to translate requirements into reliable technical deliverables while maintaining high engineering standards.
The successful candidate will take ownership of the HRX Engineering product surface, write well-tested code across the technology stack, handle incident response, and offer technical guidance and mentorship to less-tenured engineers. Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain features for the HR Experience product surface
- Write clean, maintainable, and thoroughly tested code across the entire stack
- Engage in sprint planning sessions, code reviews, and retrospectives
- Collaborate with design and product teams to translate business needs into technical solutions
- Monitor and enhance the overall quality, performance, and reliability of released features
- Take part in the on-call rotation and lead incident response procedures for systems owned by the team
- Mentor less-experienced engineers through code reviews and technical guidance
- Actively engage with relevant artificial intelligence tools and develop fluency over time
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of professional software engineering experience including full-stack work
- Demonstrated ability to design, build, and ship features across frontend, backend, and data layers with minimal oversight
- Proficiency in at least one modern backend language or framework such as Node.js, Ruby on Rails, or Python/Django
- Proficiency in at least one modern frontend framework such as React or TypeScript
- Solid understanding of relational database design, query performance, and migrations
- Strong foundation in software engineering principles including algorithms, data structures, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to author technical design documents
Qualifications
- Previous experience working within fintech, payroll, or HR technology domains
- Experience designing GraphQL or REST APIs
- Exposure to accessibility best practices
