Twilio is currently seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join its Compliance Experiences team, which operates within the core platform domain handling Phone Numbers and Compliance (KYC). In this remote position based in British Columbia, Alberta, or Ontario, Canada, the successful candidate will provide technical leadership for platforms processing millions of requests. The role involves designing distributed microservices architectures, leveraging artificial intelligence tools for accelerated software development, and translating complex international telecommunications regulations into reliable APIs. This position suits an experienced engineering leader who excels at driving technical strategy, mentoring peers, and tackling large-scale cloud-native challenges without direct authority. While the company embraces a remote-first work environment, occasional in-person attendance for team off-sites or customer meetings may be required.
Responsibilities
- Design and guide the long-term technical roadmap while migrating legacy infrastructure to a modern distributed microservices framework
- Utilize AI coding assistants to automate tasks, generate comprehensive test suites, and accelerate prototyping workflows
- Drive engineering standards and make critical architectural choices balancing feature innovation with high reliability and security
- Collaborate with product teams to convert global telecom regulations into developer-friendly APIs
- Mentor senior and staff engineers while fostering a culture of technical curiosity and continuous learning
- Manage technical risks and lead teams through production incidents focusing on lasting remediation
- Produce detailed design documentation and RFCs for both engineering peers and executive leadership
Requirements
- Over 12 years of experience building highly available, secure, and mission-critical cloud-native distributed systems
- Expert proficiency in Java or Go alongside deep familiarity with AWS ecosystems such as Lambda, EKS, DynamoDB, and Kafka
- Extensive background in cloud-native infrastructure, microservices, and five-nines resilient system design
- Demonstrated practical use of AI development tools for code synthesis, debugging, and architecture brainstorming
- Proven history of developing and maintaining high-volume public APIs focused on developer experience
- Strong familiarity with high-throughput data storage solutions, Kubernetes, Terraform, and continuous integration paradigms
- Demonstrated capability to drive technical direction across multiple teams without direct authority
Qualifications
- Knowledge of telecom domain protocols, local number porting, or international regulatory compliance
- Experience developing internal platforms that increase development velocity for other teams
- Background in building or incorporating AI agents into internal platforms or automated operational workflows
