Gusto is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for its Solo team to help develop an all-in-one business platform designed for solopreneurs and accountants. Gusto provides payroll, health insurance, retirement plans, and HR services to support over half a million small businesses across the United States. In this hybrid role based out of the San Francisco office, the engineer will work on developing new AI-native product capabilities and scaling core features that directly influence revenue generation.

This opportunity is well-suited for a hands-on technical owner who enjoys operating in a fast-paced environment with high autonomy. The individual will collaborate closely with product management, design, data science, and go-to-market partners to shape product direction beyond traditional engineering tasks. Candidates should expect to utilize artificial intelligence tools within their daily workflow and help integrate AI features into the platform itself.

Gusto provides a total rewards package that includes a base salary range of $197,000 to $247,000 for San Francisco, along with equity in the form of restricted stock units. Hybrid team members are generally required to report to the office roughly two to three days each week. Additionally, a two-day travel requirement to a company office is mandatory for onboarding purposes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the complete delivery lifecycle for brand-new product areas from initial technical architecture to deployment
  • Utilize artificial intelligence tools daily to accelerate personal productivity and embed AI functionalities into user experiences
  • Collaborate directly with product, design, data science, and go-to-market teams to test ideas and ship iteratively
  • Design pragmatic data models and system architectures for uncharted product territory
  • Develop and maintain both frontend user interfaces and backend application programming interfaces with scalability in mind
  • Contribute to product strategy, design choices, and go-to-market discussions beyond standard coding duties
  • Establish engineering standards and technical foundations for a growing product group

Requirements

  • Minimum of eight years of professional software engineering background
  • Demonstrated history of delivering full-stack features from conception to production
  • Working knowledge of modern development tools including Ruby on Rails, React, TypeScript, and GraphQL
  • Proven ownership of greenfield or zero-to-one product initiatives
  • Ability to operate with autonomy and establish direction amidst ambiguous circumstances
  • Habitual application of artificial intelligence tools during routine engineering tasks
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities paired with cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Ability to work from the San Francisco office approximately two to three days per week
  • Availability to travel for two days to a company location for initial onboarding
