This remote position is designated for a Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Trust and Safety) to define long-term technical strategies and oversee complex, high-impact initiatives. In this capacity, you will transform ambiguous challenges into actionable technical frameworks, guide projects through execution, and bolster system reliability. Operating as a force multiplier, you will elevate engineering standards, mentor colleagues, and collaborate closely with product management, design, and analytics departments.

The role suits seasoned backend engineers who excel in distributed systems, value technical ownership, and possess strong communication abilities to coordinate with global teams. Affirm functions as a remote-first organization, permitting candidates to work from eligible Canadian provinces including Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan. Selected personnel will be invited to participate in an in-person onboarding experience.

Responsibilities

  • Determine the technical strategy and roadmap for the team on an annual scale while coordinating business-critical initiatives
  • Partner with product management, design, and analytics colleagues to balance technical sustainability, risks, and project trade-offs
  • Advocate for effective technical designs, operational policies, and solutions across engineering teams
  • Manage team operations, availability, and on-call duties by establishing monitoring systems, triage rotations, testing protocols, and alerting mechanisms
  • Establish code review and design benchmarks to cultivate a strong culture of quality and technical ownership
  • Mentor engineers through guidance, direct feedback, and leading by example

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of professional background designing, building, and deploying backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
  • Proven track record creating highly available distributed systems leveraging technologies like AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver major features or deprecate legacy system components via structured technical and execution plans
  • Experience writing clean, high-quality code that peers can easily understand and utilize
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration within a global engineering structure
