Affirm is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Cost Engineering) to join its fully remote team and spearhead cost visibility, optimization, and governance across cloud and AI infrastructure. In this role, you will sit at the intersection of infrastructure, finance, and data engineering to build automated tooling, manage financial workflows, and tackle cloud billing complexities at scale. Responsibilities
- Establish technical strategy and guide team execution on an annual timescale
- Partner with product, design, and analytics teams to manage technical risks, tradeoffs, and sustainability
- Act as a force-multiplier by defining technical solutions and operational processes
- Manage team operations, availability, monitoring, triage rotations, and alerting systems
- Promote quality and ownership by setting code review standards and writing technical content
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of professional experience building and launching large-scale backend systems using Python or Kotlin
- Extensive background in developing highly available distributed systems with AWS, Spark, MySQL, and Kubernetes
- Practical experience building anomaly detection, dashboards, or reporting with a FinOps or cost-visibility platform such as FinOut, CloudHealth, or Kubecost
- Demonstrated track record of creating automated tooling using Python or Terraform to scale cost reviews
- Hands-on experience processing large cloud billing datasets from AWS Cost and Usage Reports or Snowflake using complex SQL queries
