Affirm is seeking a remote Staff Software Engineer for its Capacity Modeling team to help ensure systems can handle heavy traffic events. In this position, you will build statistical models that connect traffic demands with necessary computing resources, translating forecasts into actionable capacity recommendations across various environments and regions.
This role suits experienced engineers who can shape technical strategy on a yearly timeline, amplify team capabilities, and establish solid operational processes and monitoring standards. You will partner with product management, analytics, and design teams to manage technical risks, maintain system sustainability, and mentor other engineers through technical writing and design reviews.
The position is available remotely within the country of employment, though new hires will attend an in-person onboarding experience. Responsibilities
- Define the technical direction and strategy for the team over a year-long horizon
- Partner with analytics, design, and product management to oversee technical risks and trade-offs
- Establish technical solutions and operational processes that act as a force multiplier for the group
- Manage team availability and operations by setting up monitoring, alerting, playbooks, policies, and triage rotations
- Set design and code review standards to build a culture of quality and technical ownership
- Guide and mentor team members by offering feedback and modeling strong engineering practices
Requirements
- Minimum of eight years of experience in designing, launching, and building large-scale backend systems using Kotlin or Python
- Extensive background in creating highly available distributed systems with Kubernetes, Spark, AWS, and MySQL
- Experience managing the scaling up and scaling down of computing resources during major shopping events like Black Friday Cyber Monday or Prime Day
- Practical background in tuning multi-threading, CPU, memory, and autoscaling for compute workloads
- Track record of delivering major system components or features through clear technical and execution planning
