Spotify is seeking a Staff Engineer to join its Content Platform team in London. The Content Platform manages the ingestion, storage, processing, and delivery of all music, podcast, and audiobook titles available on Spotify. Within this division, the Media domain handles the complete media pipeline, from initial content intake to playback for global audiences.
In this position, you will provide architectural leadership for the media platform, directing the technical roadmap across transcoding, storage, delivery, packaging, and playback. You will steer large-scale technical projects, balance infrastructure expenses against technical choices, and collaborate with product and engineering managers to align strategies with reliability and financial targets. The role also involves writing technical design documents, producing architecture decision records, publishing requests for comments, and mentoring senior personnel.

Responsibilities
- Define the long-term technical architecture for the media pipeline within the Content Platform
- Lead large-scale engineering initiatives across multiple squads involving media delivery, codec rollouts, and playback capabilities
- Partner with product managers, engineering managers, and senior engineers to align technical strategies with product goals and reliability targets
- Direct architectural choices concerning media ingestion, transcoding, packaging, storage, delivery, and playback
- Author and review technical design documents, architecture decision records, and requests for comments
- Mentor senior engineers to improve technical quality and architectural methodology
- Monitor how media architecture choices affect compute, storage, CDN utilization, and platform sustainability
Requirements
- Extensive experience building large-scale media platforms covering audio, video, encoding, transcoding, packaging, delivery, and playback
- Demonstrated success leading architecture across multiple engineering teams
- Significant background designing and operating distributed systems at internet scale
- Familiarity with the trade-offs between codecs, packaging formats, playback technologies, storage, networking, and infrastructure expenses
- Track record of steering multi-quarter technical initiatives from proposal to organization-wide adoption
- Strong communication skills for drafting requests for comments and design documentation
