Pinterest is seeking a Staff Data Scientist, Forecasting to serve as the technical lead for its forecasting team in San Francisco. Pinterest operates a visual discovery platform where individuals worldwide find creative ideas, plan projects, and gather inspiration for daily life. In this high-visibility position, the selected professional will own the complete lifecycle of forecasting models for vital company metrics, including monthly active users. This role suits an experienced data scientist with strong technical leadership skills who can shape forecasting strategies, collaborate closely with engineering teams, and deliver actionable insights directly to senior leadership and vice presidents.

The person in this role will define model architectures, establish technical standards, and drive broader time-series applications such as anomaly detection, automated root-cause analysis, and attribution modeling. Additionally, the individual will guide and mentor at least two other data scientists, helping to elevate overall technical quality and execution. Applicants must be based in the United States and are expected to work in an office setting for in-person collaboration once or twice per quarter, while operating under the company's PinFlex working model. Responsibilities

  • Lead the forecasting team technically and set the overarching forecasting vision
  • Manage the complete model development lifecycle from problem framing to deployment, monitoring, and explainability
  • Partner with engineering to design efficient model training and inference pipelines
  • Present scenario analyses, outputs, and recommendations to senior leadership and vice presidents
  • Build time-series solutions for anomaly detection, automated root-cause analysis, attribution, and business health warnings
  • Integrate forecasts into strategic planning and operational rhythms alongside BizOps, Finance, and product units
  • Mentor and guide a minimum of two data scientists through continuous feedback

Requirements

  • Possess at least 8 years of combined post-graduate academic and industry experience building and shipping production time-series and forecasting models using web-scale data
  • Demonstrate a track record of delivering explainable, well-calibrated forecasting systems that influence decision-making
  • Examine deep expertise in at least one scripting language, preferably Python
  • Show strong SQL capabilities utilizing Hive, Presto, or Spark SQL
  • Build reliable data pipelines and workflows using tools like Airflow
  • Exhibit strong business acumen with the ability to simplify complex problems and connect model outputs to business levers
  • Communicate complex analyses clearly to executive audiences

Qualifications

  • Hold an advanced degree such as a Master of Science or PhD
  • Bring a strong academic and practical background in applied statistics, econometrics, and time-series modeling
