Pinterest seeks a Master's Machine Learning Intern to join its engineering organization. Pinterest operates a visual discovery platform serving hundreds of millions of global users, utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning to build personalized recommendation systems and rich user experiences. In this 12-week paid internship, the incoming student will handle a dedicated project from inception to completion, working alongside experienced researchers and engineers to research and deliver production-level machine learning solutions.
This opportunity is well-suited for graduate students pursuing a higher degree who want hands-on access to large-scale data and recommendation frameworks. Interns will leverage frontier artificial intelligence tools and agents to expedite engineering tasks, prototype concepts, and build agent-friendly codebases. Participants will independently manage their assignments while collaborating with peers, mentors, and managers.
Depending on the assigned team, the summer internship offers flexible start dates in either May or June 2027. Work arrangements vary by team, spanning remote options as well as hybrid setups connected to Pinterest offices in San Francisco, Palo Alto, New York, or Seattle. Responsibilities
- Manage an individual engineering project from start to finish focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning research
- Engage with production machine learning systems covering algorithmic research, data engineering, infrastructure, training, inference, and product delivery
- Utilize frontier artificial intelligence tools and agents to accelerate implementation, prototyping, and experimentation
- Verify artificial intelligence outputs using code reviews, testing, and critical thinking to preserve security, performance, and maintainability
- Investigate codebases, debug issues, and summarize technical context utilizing artificial intelligence
- Draft clean, sustainable, and efficient code with minimal oversight from mentors and managers
Requirements
- Current enrollment in a Master's degree program focusing on Computer Science, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Statistics, Information Sciences, or a related field
- Expertise in at least one systems programming language including C++, Java, or Python
- Proficiency in at least one machine learning framework such as PyTorch, MLFlow, or TensorFlow
- Familiarity with artificial intelligence-native engineering practices and designing agent-friendly codebases
- Ability to work independently when learning new agent-first development tools
Qualifications
- Background in research and resolving analytical problems
- Experience across machine learning domains including ranking, computer vision, content recommendations, natural language processing, embeddings, or information retrieval
