Pinterest seeks a Sr. Staff Software Engineer for its Product ML Infrastructure group to establish technical roadmaps and architectures for model training and serving. Pinterest operates a visual discovery platform dedicated to providing creative inspiration to millions globally. In this role, the engineer will direct technical strategies spanning distributed training, fine-tuning, evaluation, and high-scale inference systems, focusing heavily on GPU efficiency and large-scale ranking platforms. The position involves collaborating directly with Core and Ads artificial intelligence teams to safely productionize models at scale, driving organizational migration and architecture decisions, and mentoring senior personnel. Candidates should possess a strong background in distributed machine learning systems, systems programming, and high-performance computing, along with the ability to utilize AI-assisted development tools responsibly.
This is a full-time position requiring presence in the Palo Alto, California or San Francisco, California office one to two times per quarter for in-person collaboration, meaning applicants must live within commuting distance. The base salary range is $245,402 to $429,454 USD for United States-based applicants, and the position is eligible for equity.
Responsibilities
- Formulate the technical vision and execution roadmap for model serving and training across the Product ML Infrastructure team
- Design architectures supporting distributed training, fine-tuning, distillation, evaluation, and high-scale CPU and GPU inference
- Enhance performance regarding data loading, distributed execution, GPU memory and kernels, quantization, compilation, and scheduling
- Collaborate with Core and Ads AI and machine learning teams to safely deploy features and models at Pinterest scale
- Drive cross-organizational architecture decisions, operational standards, and migrations while mentoring senior engineers
- Employ AI-assisted development and analysis to speed up prototyping and performance validation while ensuring correctness
Requirements
- Demonstrated history of establishing technical strategy and launching company-wide infrastructure projects in ambiguous conditions
- Extensive background in distributed machine learning systems, encompassing online inference and large-scale training
- Proficiency in GPU performance optimization, such as profiling, memory and kernel tuning, distributed execution, or quantization
- Familiarity with recommender systems, AI modeling, Ads ranking, feature platforms, retrieval, or comparable machine learning workloads
- Strong design and systems programming capabilities using C++, Python, or Java
- Demonstrated ability to utilize AI for speed improvements while maintaining accountability for data safeguards, quality, and correctness
- Must reside within a commutable distance of the San Francisco or Palo Alto, California office to attend in-person collaboration sessions one to two times per quarter
