The company's engineering division seeks a Sr. Staff Software Engineer to join the Data Product Platform team in San Francisco. This critical organization supports exadata-scale data warehousing and hundreds of thousands of tables to drive company-wide analytics, monetization products, and core engagement features.
This position suits a seasoned technical leader with extensive expertise in large-scale data ecosystems, analytical tooling, and data governance. The person in this role will guide technical strategy across three main pillars: data warehouse architecture, analytical velocity, and data governance policies. Responsibilities include defining storage strategies, designing experimentation and visualization platforms, establishing compliance frameworks, and laying the technical foundation for upcoming AI analytics capabilities.
Candidates must possess substantial industry background building data warehouses and collaborating across multi-functional organizations. While the position is based in San Francisco, the work model requires in-person office collaboration one to two times per quarter, permitting residency anywhere in the United States. Pinterest provides base compensation alongside equity opportunities for this role.
Responsibilities
- Lead the definition and structural design of data warehouse architecture, storage systems, governance frameworks, and usage policies
- Establish strategic direction for analytics tools including ad hoc analysis systems, experimentation platforms, data visualization, pipeline authoring, and AI-assisted analytics
- Create and drive adoption for data governance tooling and policies to ensure data quality, compliance, and responsible handling
- Direct complex, cross-functional initiatives across the data ecosystem while balancing requirements like usability, efficiency, and compliance
- Drive measurable product adoption and business impact through platform and tooling updates
- Mentor engineering staff and elevate technical standards for architectural designs, execution strategies, and critical trade-off decisions
- Partner with Product, Data Science, and Engineering groups to align on user needs and project progression
Requirements
- Minimum of 12 years of relevant industry experience working with large-scale data warehouses, platforms, and data tools
- At least 5 years of experience building data warehouses and ecosystem tools using technologies such as Trino, Spark, Flink, Airflow, Superset, Querybook, or DataHub
- Hands-on background building tools and data pipelines that incorporate AI coding solutions like Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex
- Practical experience creating AI tools and platforms to boost data engineering productivity, analytics, and pipeline authoring
- Capacity to collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners across multiple organizational units
- Availability to travel to an office for in-person collaboration one to two times per quarter

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
