Zoox is designing a custom autonomous vehicle tailored for dense urban settings, featuring bidirectional movement and four-wheel steering. The organization is currently seeking a Software Engineering Manager - Perception Occupancy for its expanding Perception department. In this hybrid role, the professional will guide technical strategy and execution for core occupancy modeling and rare event detection.
This position is well-suited for an experienced engineering leader with a strong background in computer vision, machine learning, and sensor fusion. The selected candidate will direct a team of engineers and managers, oversee multi-modal perception architectures combining vision, lidar, radar, and long-wave infrared, and collaborate closely with simulation, hardware, and systems teams. Responsibilities include shaping the technical roadmap, driving the evolution of advanced perception models, and scaling organizational health.
The successful candidate will work on complex artificial intelligence challenges to support geofence and fleet expansion while ensuring reliability in adverse weather and safety-critical environments.
Responsibilities
- Lead and build a team of managers and engineers focused on core occupancy modeling and rare event detection
- Drive the technical roadmap, productivity, and execution of the team
- Oversee the development, deployment, and technical design of critical perception models to enhance detection range, robustness, and accuracy
- Guide the consolidation of multi-modal architectures utilizing vision, lidar, radar, and long-wave IR
- Lead the adoption of state-of-the-art computer vision and machine learning methods such as foundation models and efficient geometric representations
- Collaborate cross-functional with simulation and data teams to utilize synthetic data and edge-case scenarios
- Establish best practices for data-driven decision-making and balance technical leadership with people management
Requirements
- Strong understanding of computer vision systems, AI software stacks, and sensor fusion across multiple modalities
- At least 3 years of technical leadership experience
- At least 10 years of experience in computer vision, machine learning, and related fields
- Demonstrated leadership skills in recruiting, managing, and growing technical team members for real-time systems
- Expertise in implementing autonomy solutions and deploying real-world systems
- Experience with recent artificial intelligence approaches including Transformers, VLM, LLM, and GenAI such as Diffusion, 3D/4D GS, and NeRF
Qualifications
- Familiarity with perception for autonomous vehicles or similar robots
- Hands-on experience deploying real products or platforms into the real world
- Involvement in the validation or evaluation of risk and safety-critical systems
