Vercel is looking for a Software Engineer, AI Gateway to join its distributed engineering team on a full-time remote basis. Known as an agentic infrastructure company, Vercel helps builders transition ideas into production environments rapidly and securely. Its developer platform is trusted by millions of developers globally, as well as prominent organizations like OpenAI, PayPal, and Ramp.
In this position, you will help build and improve the AI Gateway platform, delivering a single API that connects users to hundreds of models across multiple providers. Your work will center on constructing resilient, low-latency architectures that manage traffic spikes, execute smart failover strategies during provider outages, and handle rate limiting. This position suits engineers who want to solve complex distributed systems challenges and empower developers to adopt artificial intelligence without dealing with underlying provider complexities.
The role involves writing robust code, collaborating with product and infrastructure partners, and integrating new models. You will also interact with the open-source community and contribute to related developer tools.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain the AI Gateway platform, focusing on unified endpoints, rate limit management, and intelligent failover systems
- Write dependable code and perform comprehensive testing to guarantee minimal latency and stability for high-volume artificial intelligence inference requests
- Partner with product managers, researchers, and infrastructure colleagues to integrate new artificial intelligence providers and models
- Participate in the open-source community and contribute to the AI SDK alongside related projects
- Analyze user metrics and feedback to develop platform innovations such as billing unification and provider-agnostic authentication
Requirements
- At least 5 years of relevant professional experience
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript and TypeScript
- Background in backend engineering, application programming interfaces, and cloud infrastructure
- Familiarity with artificial intelligence and machine learning integrations, API gateways, distributed architectures, or high-throughput services
- Experience contributing to or participating in open-source projects
- Strong communication skills with the ability to operate in a distributed team setting
