To support this expanding fleet and growing engineering organization, Zoox is hiring a Senior/Staff Software Engineer specializing in SRE, GitHub, and CI/CD Infrastructure. This position operates in a hybrid work environment and focuses on owning the source control platform used daily by the entire engineering team.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role suited for an engineer who drives results through direct coding rather than just advisory guidance. The person in this position will shape the strategy for a Git-based monorepo, lead an upcoming transition to GitHub Cloud, and develop tooling that streamlines developer workflows. Success in this role involves partnering closely with security, product, and platform teams to transform source control into a strategic capability while eliminating bottlenecks.
The role requires deep expertise in managing monorepos, establishing branch strategies, configuring access controls, and integrating continuous integration systems. Candidates will set technical standards via design proposals, code reviews, and pairing sessions while creating automation that reduces routine toil. Responsibilities
- Formulate and execute the long-term technical roadmap for source control, transitioning from GitHub Enterprise to GitHub Cloud
- Plan and oversee every phase of the GitHub Cloud migration including design, implementation, cutover, and validation
- Scale the monorepo framework by optimizing repository structure, branch policies, ownership boundaries, large-file handling, and CI connectivity
- Create automation scripts, hooks, and developer tooling to minimize manual toil and reduce build friction
- Establish technical benchmarks through code reviews, pairing, and architectural design proposals across engineering
Requirements
- At least five years of large-scale experience operating GitHub Enterprise or an equivalent platform
- Demonstrated background scaling large monorepos for organizations comprising hundreds of engineers or more
- Strong proficiency in integrating continuous integration and deployment systems like Buildkite, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or GitLab CI
- Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform or Pulumi
- Experience executing platform migrations involving active codebases across major cloud providers
- Demonstrated technical leadership capabilities and strong written communication skills
Qualifications
- Prior hands-on experience executing a migration from GitHub Enterprise Server directly to GitHub Cloud
- Familiarity with monorepo build tools including Bazel or Buck
- Knowledge of supply-chain security practices such as signed commits, secret scanning, and dependency governance
- Experience working with code review overlays like Reviewable or Gerrit
