Job Description

Zoox is building a purpose-built, fully autonomous vehicle fleet along with the necessary supporting ecosystem to deliver urban mobility-as-a-service. Operating at the intersection of machine learning, design, and robotics, the organization seeks talented engineers to join an execution-focused group.

As a Senior or Staff Software Engineer specializing in Machine Learning and System Optimization, you will work within the Perception organization to help pioneer a multi-modality foundation model for autonomous systems. Your daily focus will involve distributing computing capacity across core perception models operating on the robot, directing large projects to improve inference efficiency, and integrating production-ready models into the on-vehicle stack.

This opportunity is well-suited for engineering experts experienced in compressing, accelerating, and deploying complex architectures such as large language models, vision-language models, and foundation models for power- and thermal-constrained automotive SoCs. You will fine-tune machine learning models, author custom CUDA kernels, and build concurrent inference software to guarantee deterministic, real-time execution on edge hardware in a hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Distribute system hardware resources including CPU, GPU, and interconnect channels among various robot models and inference engines
  • Lead initiatives that improve compute utilization through model sharing, model fusing, and advanced scheduling strategies
  • Refine large-scale multi-modal sensor fusion models, LLMs, and VLMs using quantization techniques, pruning, mixed-precision inference frameworks, and parameter-efficient fine-tuning
  • Design and deploy model conversion and compilation pipelines using TensorRT for edge deployment
  • Develop production-grade, low-latency, and memory-safe C++ and CUDA software for real-time inference on vehicle architectures

Requirements

  • Demonstrated background in system and performance optimization for CPU and GPU architectures targeting low latency or high throughput
  • Extensive knowledge of real-time system constraints including processing latency, memory utilization, and memory bandwidth pressure
  • Expertise in model quantization and mixed-precision inference frameworks such as INT8, FP8, FP4, BF16, and FP16
  • Proficiency in low-level AI accelerator programming through the creation and optimization of custom ML ops and TensorRT plugins with CUDA kernels
  • Production-level coding skills in C++ (14, 17, and 20) and Python for concurrent, memory-safe, real-time edge device inference

Qualifications

  • Prior background in high-performance robotics fields such as autonomous vehicles, drones, or general robots
  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art autonomous driving perception algorithms including temporal 3D object detection, BEV, and 3D occupancy networks
  • Experience handling multi-modal sensor processing for vision, LiDAR, and radar
  • Knowledge of end-to-end autonomous driving paradigms such as VLM, VLA, and foundation models
  • Familiarity with edge deployment technologies including TensorRT-LLM
