Zoox is building a custom, ground-up autonomous vehicle fleet alongside an ecosystem designed for urban mobility-as-a-service. The organization is currently hiring for a Senior/Staff Software Engineer - Embedded Linux Operating Systems to join the Robot Software Infrastructure group. In this full-time hybrid position, the chosen professional will help build and evolve the high-performance operating system that drives automotive-grade hardware and autonomy systems across vehicle devices.
This role suits an engineer who enjoys tackling wide-ranging technical challenges and understanding how individual software components integrate into a larger robotics ecosystem. Daily work centers on platform-level development, collaborating closely with cross-functional groups including hardware engineering, manufacturing, operations, release management, and development teams to facilitate scalable vehicle deployment.
Ideal candidates bring extensive experience in producing software applications and designing custom embedded Linux operating environments. Responsibilities include architecting reliable robotics infrastructure, building and maintaining OS platforms, managing bootloader processes, and tuning kernel-space components and device drivers. Team members will additionally handle hardware bring-up, diagnose issues, and ensure seamless delivery of the operating system.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain the OS platform powering various on-bot hardware devices and applications
- Architect and implement platform software for robust robotics infrastructure
- Configure and maintain embedded Linux build systems like Yocto and bootloader processes such as U-Boot
- Develop and tune device drivers and kernel-space components utilizing C, C++, or Rust
- Collaborate across multiple functions to aid integration, deliver the OS platform, triage bugs, and support new hardware bring-up and manufacturing duties
Requirements
- Minimum of eight years of experience delivering production software applications and systems
- At least two years of experience delivering custom Embedded Linux operating systems
- Deep familiarity with Linux, build systems such as Yocto, and bootloaders like U-Boot
- Working knowledge of Linux init systems, containerization concepts, and file systems
- Understanding of device drivers and kernel-space code
- Proficiency in a language without automatic memory management like C or C++
- Proficiency in multiple scripting languages including bash and Python
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree or equivalent practical experience
- Graduate degree focusing on firmware, operating systems, or networking
- Prior experience with embedded Linux inside robotics applications
- Familiarity with security software including secure boot, PKI, OTA software updates, and hardware key storage
- Familiarity with Nvidia GPUs, Nvidia Thor or Orin, Cuda, and TRT
