Spotify is hiring a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join the Content Platform team in London on a full-time, hybrid basis. The Content Platform team manages the entire lifecycle of music, podcasts, audiobooks, and new audio formats, ensuring all material is trusted, safe, and high quality.
In this role, the successful candidate will build and scale foundational machine learning systems that handle content understanding, safety, policy enforcement, and decisioning. Depending on background and focus, work may involve multimodal content understanding, safety, risk detection, compliance, or platform-level machine learning systems. This position suits experienced technical leaders who can design architectures, establish technical strategy, and mentor other engineers while collaborating closely with product, policy, and engineering teams.
The role offers a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from home alongside required in-person meetings in London.
Responsibilities
- Define and drive machine learning strategy across safety, content understanding, policy enforcement, and platform-level decisioning
- Build and scale production machine learning systems for moderation, classification, ranking, risk detection, and content evaluation
- Develop automated decisioning systems supporting content integrity, quality, safety, and policy compliance at scale
- Design and deploy machine learning systems handling multiple modalities such as audio, text, image, and video
- Construct systems capable of real-time content evaluation and decision-making at Spotify scale
- Provide controlled and reliable access to metadata and content for downstream applications and products
- Partner with Product, Trust and Safety, Engineering, and Policy teams to turn content standards into technical solutions
- Promote automation while keeping high standards for reliability, safety, quality, explainability, and fairness
- Deliver technical leadership across teams by mentoring engineers and shaping machine learning engineering and evaluation best practices
Requirements
- Significant experience designing and building production-grade machine learning systems at scale
- Extensive experience using modern machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, JAX, or similar tools
- Ability to balance automation with user experience, safety, quality, and reliability
- Experience tackling complex and ambiguous technical problems that carry significant product and business impact
- Strong systems thinking capabilities connecting data, models, infrastructure, and decisioning to platform outcomes
- Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring others, and communicating across technical and non-technical teams
Qualifications
- Experience with or strong interest in multimodal machine learning across text, audio, image, or video
- Background building systems where machine learning outputs inform or automate real-world decisions
