Canonical seeks an experienced software engineer to join the Metal As A Service team and help advance hyperscale provisioning technology. Canonical produces Ubuntu, an operating system widely utilized across cloud computing, artificial intelligence, IoT, and data science initiatives. Operating as a founder-led and profitable enterprise, the company relies heavily on distributed collaboration with personnel distributed globally.

This position involves building the core features of MAAS, shaping its architecture to enhance speed and usability, and writing software primarily utilizing Python and Go. Selected engineers will collaborate across teams, contribute to testing and continuous integration workflows, and maintain documentation geared toward data center users. The role requires willingness to travel internationally roughly two to four times annually for internal team sprints and alignment meetings.

The role suits technical leaders who understand performance at scale, storage, networking, and system usability. Applicants should possess a strong background in backend development and demonstrate technical ownership of complex engineering problems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop core features and components for the MAAS platform
  • Refine the architecture of MAAS to improve speed, simplicity, and user experience
  • Partner with other internal teams to guarantee timely releases and tool compatibility
  • Contribute improvements to test coverage and continuous integration pipelines
  • Write and maintain documentation for data center operators and system users
  • Take ownership of technical problems and drive them toward resolution
  • Travel internationally multiple times per year for collaborative company events

Requirements

  • Professional software development experience in Python or Go for backend roles
  • Familiarity with Linux server technologies such as KVM virtualization and LXC containers
  • Understanding of networking concepts including PXE, DHCP, TFTP, DNS, and NTP
  • Knowledge of Baseboard Management Controllers and protocols like Redfish, IPMI, and AMT
  • Strong background in networking, storage technologies, and cloud hosting infrastructure
  • Proficiency in English communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Willingness to travel internationally up to four times annually

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field
  • Experience with large-scale physical server provisioning, rapid deployment, and automation
  • Familiarity with open source tools and methodologies connected to Ubuntu projects like Launchpad, Debian packaging tools, and snapcraft
  • An exceptional academic track record from high school and university
