Job Description
Dropbox is looking for a hands-on Senior Manager, Data Engineering to oversee the fundamental data infrastructure powering its entire business. In this position, you will lead and expand a team of data engineers responsible for ingestion, transformation, orchestration, and serving layers. Your primary focus will be delivering robust data products and pipelines relied upon by Product, GTM, Finance, and the CTO organization, while transitioning ticket-driven workflows into reusable, self-serve analytics platforms.
This role is ideal for a technical and product-minded engineering leader who can maintain high standards for system reliability and data quality. You will collaborate closely with Data Science, Business Intelligence Engineering, Analytics, and Product teams to establish semantic layers, data contracts, and strong unit economics for compute and storage efficiency. Dropbox values durable skills such as awareness, judgment, adaptability, and connection, ensuring leaders can amplify human judgment and build trust during periods of technological change.
As an engineering manager at Dropbox, you will be expected to cultivate a culture of ownership, technical excellence, continuous learning, and psychological safety. You will establish rigorous engineering practices encompassing code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD for data, incident response, and postmortems, while championing the measured integration of AI coding assistants to boost productivity.
Responsibilities
- Establish and enforce rigorous data quality standards including lineage, freshness monitoring, anomaly detection, and metrics.
- Lead the engineering of self-serve analytics capabilities to increase partner team autonomy and reduce custom requests.
- Manage unit economics for the data platform by improving compute and storage efficiency without harming reliability.
- Partner with cross-functional groups to define semantic layers, modeling standards, and trustworthy data contracts.
- Implement engineering best practices such as code reviews, testing, data CI/CD, incident response, and postmortems.
- Lead, mentor, and hire a high-talent-density team of data engineers.
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of data engineering or backend and data infrastructure experience in high-scale environments.
- At least 3 years of direct experience managing and growing engineering teams, including hiring, coaching, and performance management.
- Proven background in building and operating large-scale batch and streaming pipelines utilizing tools like Spark, dbt, or Airflow.
- Experience working with modern lakehouse or warehouse stacks such as Databricks, Snowflake, or BigQuery.
- Demonstrated ownership of data SLAs, observability, lineage, and incident response for critical pipelines.
- Strong data modeling fundamentals with the ability to design semantic layers and data contracts for downstream consumers.
Qualifications
- Track record of building self-serve data or analytics platforms that reduced bespoke request volumes.
- Experience integrating AI coding tools and LLM-based workflows with measured impact and guardrails.
- Demonstrated success in improving compute and storage unit economics while maintaining system reliability.
- Familiarity with modern data governance, privacy, and access-control practices.
- Experience operating in a pod or embedded model that serves multiple business partners.
