Spotify is seeking a Senior Applied Research Scientist - Personalization for its Speak Team in New York. This full-time position operates on a remote-friendly schedule that permits working from home while still requiring occasional in-person meetings. The Personalization division creates features that help listeners discover and enjoy music and podcasts, while the Speak Team specifically designs advanced speech models for recognition, synthesis, and speech-to-speech applications.
In this role, the incumbent will build generative conversational speech-to-speech models and collaborate with engineering groups to advance production pipelines. Ideal candidates possess a strong academic and professional research background alongside expertise in Python and PyTorch. The position involves designing end-to-end approaches for speech synthesis and recognition, expanding use cases across different markets, and sharing expertise with peers.
Spotify provides a comprehensive compensation package that includes a base salary range between $169,157 and $241,653 plus equity. Additional offerings feature health insurance, a 401(k) plan, six months of paid parental leave, a monthly meal allowance, 23 paid days off, and 13 paid flexible holidays.
Responsibilities
- Develop and experiment with novel methods for speech synthesis and speech recognition utilizing current research
- Expand speech use cases across various products and markets
- Build and scale models to power the Spotify platform
- Share knowledge and champion research and development best practices within the Speak team
- Partner with engineering and data teams to establish new infrastructure and high-quality data sources
- Improve speech recognition and synthesis pipelines to turn proven research into scalable products
Requirements
- Experience in an academic or professional setting conducting high-quality research
- Working experience with transformers, GANs, diffusion models, flow matching, VAEs, or audio codecs
- Experience developing generative models for speech synthesis, speech recognition, audio or music, natural language processing, or computer vision
- Strong practical experience with Python and PyTorch
- Strong communication skills capable of explaining technical ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences
Qualifications
- PhD degree in machine learning in addition to professional experience
