Job Description

Affirm operates a financial services network providing predictable ways for consumers to pay over time. The company is currently developing its first fully featured advertising platform to enhance its merchant and consumer marketplace. The Marketplace Performance team manages core monetization components that generate gross merchandise volume and partners closely with Revenue, Technical Account Management, Customer Success Management, and Merchant teams.

Affirm is hiring a remote-first Manager, Software Engineering (Marketplace Performance) to lead technical strategy, mentor team members, and drive execution on business-critical systems. This role suits an experienced engineering leader who can balance hands-on architectural understanding with operational reliability, incident response, and team development. The position is a full-time, remote opportunity.

Selected candidates will join a remote-first organization and participate in an in-person onboarding experience. Compensation packages include base pay, equity rewards, monthly health, wellness, and technology stipends, and fully subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and their dependents.

Responsibilities

  • Establish the team's technical strategy spanning a year-long horizon and align it with critical business objectives.
  • Partner with product management, design, and analytics during the product development lifecycle to evaluate risks and trade-offs.
  • Define and promote technical solutions and operational processes to act as a force-multiplier.
  • Oversee operational availability by implementing monitoring, triage routines, playbooks, policies, and alerting.
  • Establish code review and design standards to foster an internal culture of quality and ownership.
  • Guide and develop engineering talent through feedback, direct support, and leading by example.

Requirements

  • Minimum of eight years of experience designing, building, and launching distributed backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
  • Extensive background in creating highly available distributed architectures utilizing technologies like AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating functionality via technical and execution plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, high-quality code.
  • At least two years of working experience in Ad Tech or related platforms.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration with a global engineering team.

Qualifications

  • Experience building consumer-facing experiences with user interface frameworks such as React.
  • Either a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.
