Job Description

Pinterest operates a digital platform that helps users around the globe discover creative concepts, plan future projects, and find inspiration for everyday life. The company is currently hiring a Manager II, Machine Learning Engineering for its Content Foundation team to work on-site in San Francisco, California.

In this role, you will guide a team of applied scientists and engineers building foundational content understanding architectures, systems, and signals. Your work will directly support core platform features across Search, Discovery, Growth, and Ads by establishing a long-term technical vision for semantic signal generation and reusable model-powered frameworks. You will tackle complex technical hurdles regarding large language model and vision-language model technologies, inference throughput, serving efficiency, and downstream impact measurement.

This position is well-suited for an experienced engineering leader with a robust background in distributed machine learning systems, cross-functional collaboration, and project management. Successful candidates will excel at aligning stakeholders, clearing up ambiguous problem spaces, and driving multi-quarter execution plans that span data pipelines, modeling, and production environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and expand a team of applied scientists and engineers focused on content understanding signals and infrastructure.
  • Establish a long-term technical vision for scalable model-powered infrastructure, semantic signal generation, and reusable foundational layers.
  • Collaborate closely with data science, product, and downstream engineering departments to drive platform impact.
  • Oversee project execution, roadmap planning, risk mitigation, technical decision-making, and status updates.
  • Resolve technical challenges involving vision-language models, large language models, inference throughput, and serving efficiency.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of industry experience
  • At least 2 years of management experience
  • Experience with large-scale distributed training and inference of vision-language and large language models
  • Experience with distributed tooling for machine learning data pipelines such as Spark and Hadoop
  • Experience leading ambiguous machine learning projects to develop and improve generative AI models
  • Technical leadership experience across data and machine learning systems with multi-quarter roadmap ownership

Qualifications

  • Master of Science degree in computer engineering, computer science, or equivalent practical experience
  • Academic publications at premier machine learning and data mining conferences such as KDD, NeurIPS, ICML, or SIGIR
