Spotify is seeking a full-time Legal Counsel, Litigation and Copyright to join its growing legal department based in New York. Operating in over 180 markets, the company encounters a wide range of legal questions, including a rising volume of patent disputes alongside ongoing copyright and content matters. In this on-site role, the selected professional will tackle diverse contentious and advisory issues involving copyright and patent litigation, helping the business navigate complex legal challenges.
This position is well-suited for a self-motivated attorney who can evaluate legal risks while balancing corporate objectives. Candidates will collaborate with outside counsel, manage budgets, coordinate with communications teams, and build scalable processes to handle increasing claims. The role requires strong judgment, the ability to explain intricate technical concepts to non-lawyers, and comfort with large data sets and complex subject matter.

Responsibilities
- Oversee litigation, pre-litigation, regulatory proceedings, and dispute matters across patent and copyright practice areas
- Partner with outside counsel to create case strategies, handle budgets, and seek efficient resolutions
- Collaborate with internal business groups and the communications team to establish dispute strategies and address legal risk
- Provide proactive guidance to internal personnel regarding dispute avoidance, resolution, and threat mitigation
- Process information requests, law enforcement inquiries, and subpoenas directed at the company
- Design scalable workflows, internal policies, and training programs to establish effective risk mitigation procedures
- Monitor developments in copyright and patent law affecting the media and technology sectors
Requirements
- Hold a law degree from a top-tier law school and maintain qualification to practice law as in-house counsel in New York
- Possess at least five years of litigation experience gained at a law firm, in-house, or both
- Bring meaningful background handling copyright litigation and complex, multi-jurisdictional disputes
- Demonstrate experience with e-discovery and working alongside technical experts to build defense strategies
- Exhibit strong written and oral communication skills with the capability to explain technical legal concepts clearly
