Coinbase is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the technical vision for its identity verification platform within the Platform organization. Coinbase operates as a remote-first enterprise, though personnel meet periodically in person for quarterly sessions referred to as surges. This position involves directing the end-to-end architecture for verification infrastructure, decision engines, and vendor orchestration that support Retail, Prime, and Institutional divisions globally. The individual taking on this post will guide a multi-year effort to transition onto a unified platform, establish vendor-agnostic routing, and build self-serve scalability. This role is well-suited for a backend specialist with extensive distributed-systems background who can navigate complex compliance and security challenges within financial technology.
Responsibilities
- Manage the complete architectural direction and end-to-end design for the identity verification platform supporting all business segments
- Consolidate verification systems onto a single decision-engine platform while phasing out legacy rules and single-vendor dependencies
- Build vendor-agnostic orchestration featuring automated real-time routing and failover capabilities
- Scale the verification framework to accommodate new regional markets, products, and verification modalities including biometric, document, and liveness checks
- Establish platform patterns, APIs, and abstractions across multiple engineering pods
Requirements
- Accumulate eight or more years of backend software engineering experience with production systems in fintech or regulated spaces
- Demonstrate technical leadership in delivering complex backend systems spanning architecture, system design, and production deployment
- Possess distributed-systems expertise covering high availability, reliability, scalability, and Tier-0 API design
- Code proficiently in Go or a comparable systems programming language with practical background in Kubernetes, gRPC, and microservices
- Bring domain knowledge in KYC, identity, fraud prevention infrastructure, payments, or vendor orchestration
Qualifications
- Experience applying generative AI responsibly to enhance workflow efficiency, quality, and cost while maintaining human oversight
