Coinbase is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Access & Authorization team within its Platform group. This remote-first position involves shaping the distributed services that customers utilize to securely access the platform.

The person in this role will design fundamental authentication and authorization features that balance security with usability across multiple products and partner integrations. Responsibilities include building low-latency Go and gRPC services, leading technical designs for initiatives such as passkeys and mobile OAuth, and partnering with security and infrastructure teams.

This opportunity is well-suited for a backend engineer with extensive experience in distributed systems, security, and identity infrastructure who can mentor colleagues and drive complex, cross-functional technical projects.

Responsibilities

Manage the complete lifecycle of features involving authentication, tokens, OAuth, sessions, 2FA, account recovery, and edge authorization
Develop dependable Go and gRPC services equipped with observability, failure testing, and defined SLOs for web, mobile, API, and partner environments
Spearhead technical designs for signed authorization tokens, biometric recovery, device-aware authentication, and mobile OAuth
Collaborate with security, product, infrastructure, and fraud departments to balance customer conversion, account safety, and regulatory needs
Create self-service tools and streamline integration patterns to help product teams safely adopt access capabilities
Guide fellow engineers through code reviews, design evaluations, pairing, and participation in on-call rotations

Requirements

Minimum of 8 years of backend software engineering background
Proficiency in Go or another systems-oriented programming language
Experience building and running reliable, high-throughput distributed production services
Expertise in designing secure APIs and managing trust boundaries, authentication, authorization, session handling, and token management
Familiarity with gRPC, Protocol Buffers, and data stores such as Redis or DynamoDB
Ability to utilize metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and SLOs to maintain critical services
Record of delivering cross-functional projects from initial design to production release
Responsible use of generative AI while maintaining human oversight for business outputs
