The organization seeks a Staff Software Engineer to join the Financial Infrastructure team within Gusto Retirement. This position centers on managing and developing backend services, APIs, and money movement systems. The individual will handle settlements, payments, tax integrations, and regulatory compliance workflows while collaborating closely with product, operations, and compliance departments. Daily tasks involve writing production code, handling financial edge cases, debugging systems, and mentoring other engineers.

Responsibilities
- Design and deploy backend services and APIs for financial transactions and integrations
- Handle payment processing, fund settlements, reconciliation, and ledger corrections
- Support critical operational workflows including payroll connections, KYB, KYC, 401(k) loans, billing, and IRAs
- Partner with product, compliance, and engineering teams to scope and deliver production software
- Troubleshoot live production errors and enhance observability and operational tooling
- Mentor engineering personnel to address complex architectural challenges at scale
- Write well-tested and maintainable source code
Requirements
- Over eight years of professional software engineering experience building production platforms
- Strong background working with application services, APIs, and data-heavy workflows
- Comfort taking end-to-end ownership of systems, including operational support
- Experience partnering with product managers to deliver scoped engineering solutions
- Proficiency with Ruby on Rails or an equivalent backend framework
Qualifications
- Background working on financial platforms, payment processing, or other high-correctness domains
- Experience utilizing AI tools to accelerate development and testing capabilities
- Familiarity with emerging AI frameworks and scaling AI practices across engineering teams
