Coinbase is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to join its Payments team on a remote basis. Coinbase operates within the crypto economy, building financial access tools and aiming to increase economic freedom globally. The Payments platform serves as the gateway between traditional finance and cryptocurrency, managing fiat on- and off-ramps as well as core payment services that power customer-facing applications. This position suits an experienced technical leader capable of guiding engineering vision, architectural consistency, and platform efficiency across global payment rails and fund-flow systems. Team members gather periodically for in-person collaboration sessions known as surges. The target annual base salary for this Canadian role is specified as $260,100 CAD, with additional compensation possibly including equity, bonuses, and standard benefits.
Responsibilities
- Formulate and execute a multi-quarter technical roadmap encompassing transfer systems, routing, and payment rails.
- Design and scale the core payment platform to ensure high performance, low latency, and global cost efficiency.
- Direct end-to-end design and execution for major cross-team projects such as migrations and resilience programs.
- Establish and monitor technical standards for financial correctness, including auditability, reconciliation, and failure handling.
- Collaborate with risk, regulatory, product, and financial hub teams to align architecture with compliance and user experience goals.
- Mentor senior and staff level engineers to improve review rigor and system design quality.
- Leverage operational data and observability metrics to identify platform weaknesses and drive reliability upgrades.
- Represent the payment engineering organization in leadership discussions to gain stakeholder alignment on major technical strategies.
Requirements
- Minimum of ten years of experience creating and running large-scale distributed production systems.
- Extensive background in money-movement architecture involving payment service providers, ISO 20022, double-entry systems, and routing.
- Advanced proficiency in backend programming languages like Go, Python, or Java alongside cloud-native architecture.
- Demonstrated ability to design highly available and high-performance system infrastructures.
- Capacity to identify potential scaling constraints ahead of time and execute proactive solutions.
- Experience spearheading cross-functional technical projects and providing mentorship to senior engineering personnel.
