Job Description
Muon Space is seeking a Senior Remote Sensing Data Scientist to join its calibration team and build out on-orbit data calibration systems for multispectral infrared imaging missions. Founded in 2021, the company designs, builds, and operates LEO satellite constellations that provide mission-critical Earth intelligence data for applications such as wildfire detection, weather monitoring, and environmental observation.
In this role, the successful candidate will bridge data science and software engineering to translate complex calibration algorithms into hardened production pipelines. Responsibilities include creating automated testing, monitoring, and diagnostic visualization tooling, as well as working on pre-launch and on-orbit calibration for the FireSat and Space-Based Environmental Monitoring programs.
This position suits professionals with deep expertise in remote sensing, imaging instrument calibration, and robust Python software development. The role requires working out of the Denver, Colorado office three days per week as part of a hybrid schedule, and applicants must meet U.S. government export control requirements. Full-time team members receive a comprehensive benefits package, equity, and paid time off.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate production-grade calibration and image-processing pipelines for multispectral infrared imagery.
- Convert calibration algorithms like dark offset correction, non uniformity correction, and radiometric gain into robust production code.
- Analyze pre-launch and on-orbit calibration data to derive and validate calibration coefficients.
- Build monitoring, alerting, and automated diagnostic visualizations to track calibration accuracy and image quality metrics.
- Contribute to continuous integration, deployment, containerization, and observability tools.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with calibration scientists, instrument engineers, and product teams to maintain operational calibration services.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience calibrating imaging instruments.
- Hands-on experience handling complex data derived from novel imaging instruments.
- Proven track record of operating production data or analytics pipelines for scientific data with monitoring and automated testing.
- Experience translating numerical or calibration algorithms from prototypes into maintainable production code.
- Advanced Python software engineering capabilities including modern packaging, pytest, version control, and CI/CD workflows.
- Solid understanding of statistics, applied mathematics, and instrument physics related to radiometric error budgets.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. with 3 or more years, M.S. with 6 or more years, or B.S. with 8 or more years of industry experience.
- Familiarity with mid-wave infrared instruments and mid-wave infrared data processing.
- Deep knowledge of remote sensing science, radiometric calibration, SI-traceability, and uncertainty analysis.
- Experience with detector characterization, calibration campaign design, and geospatial data processing.
- Familiarity with geospatial data tools and formats such as XArray, COG, and NetCDF.
- Experience with containerization, workflow orchestration, cloud-native systems, and infrastructure-as-code.
Core Skills
Benefits
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401k retirement plan
- Short and long-term disability
- Life insurance
- Three weeks of paid vacation for new employees
- 12 paid holidays
- Unlimited sick time
