Job Description

Muon Space is seeking a Remote Sensing Data Scientist to join its IR Data Products team and develop derived data products for the FireSat and Space-Based Environmental Monitoring missions. In this position, the professional will prototype and operationalize algorithms that convert raw Level-1 imagery from custom multispectral imaging instruments into high-level geospatial insights for various end users. The role involves writing production-ready code, validating scientific quality, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and engaging with technical stakeholders.

This position is well-suited for a hands-on technical specialist who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys the intersection of Earth observation science and agile product development. Muon Space is an end-to-end Space Systems Provider founded in 2021 that designs, builds, and operates low Earth orbit satellite constellations to supply mission-critical data for environmental and weather monitoring.

Please note that this role requires working on-site in the Denver, Colorado office for three days every week. Applicants must also meet export control requirements, meaning they must be U.S. persons or able to obtain the necessary export authorizations under U.S. government regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop derived data products for infrared imaging missions
  • Design, test, and enhance scalable algorithms to transform multispectral infrared imagery into geospatial products
  • Contribute to product roadmaps and technical design documents
  • Participate in customer-facing discussions, technical interchange meetings, and program reviews
  • Produce production-ready code for operational data services and client-facing pipelines
  • Verify the scientific integrity and quantitative validation of derived mission products
  • Partner cross-functionally with instrument engineers, calibration scientists, and software developers

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience building geospatial data products from novel imaging instruments
  • Demonstrated ability to apply first principles to complex problem-solving
  • Practical background working with real-world sensor data from new imaging systems
  • Proficiency in Python programming for development and analysis
  • Familiarity with standard geospatial libraries and formats including GDAL, Xarray, and COGs
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional teamwork
  • Capacity to adapt, prioritize, and operate in a fast-moving startup setting
  • Compliance with U.S. export control regulations for accessing restricted information

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Philosophy degree
  • Master of Science degree with three or more years of relevant industry experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree with five or more years of relevant industry experience
  • Background in processing multispectral or infrared satellite data
  • Domain expertise in meteorology, wildfire monitoring, weather, or environmental remote sensing
  • Experience supporting satellite mission lifecycles, early operations, or customer product delivery
  • Familiarity with deep learning, machine learning, and advanced image processing for remote sensing
  • Knowledge of cloud-native geospatial workflows, preferably using Amazon Web Services
  • Experience writing algorithm theoretical basis documents or product specifications
