Close seeks a remote Senior Backend Engineer to join its Backend Platform team in the United States. Operating as a bootstrapped and profitable company, Close develops communication-first, AI-powered customer relationship management software designed to eliminate manual data entry for sales teams. The engineering group operates fully remotely with around 120 team members.
In this position, you will focus on building tools and frameworks for internal engineering colleagues rather than customer-facing features. Responsibilities center on expanding developer environments like DevDawg and Spice, modernizing the backend framework stack, establishing API patterns, and setting safety guardrails for coding agents. The tech stack heavily utilizes Python, Flask, FastAPI, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Redis, and AWS infrastructure.
This role suits an experienced developer drawn to meta-problems who has production-level experience with AI tooling and LLM-backed workflows. Candidates should be comfortable engaging directly with internal teammates, handling production observability, and designing robust APIs. As an early hire on a newly formed team, you will have significant influence over system architecture and operational direction.
Responsibilities
- Expand cloud development environments and automated review tools like DevDawg and Spice
- Design and implement paved roads for the organization's API layer including REST blueprints and auth plumbing
- Modernize backend framework layers with clear migration paths such as moving from Flask to FastAPI
- Manage production observability, metrics, alerting, and system readiness standards
- Build shared backend services, eventing patterns, and database migration guardrails
- Establish constraints and test harnesses to safely merge agent-written code
- Partner closely with the infrastructure team to build application layers on top of AWS and Kubernetes
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience as a seasoned Python engineer capable of setting architectural patterns
- Production-level experience shipping meaningful LLM-backed or agentic work to real users
- Active daily usage of coding agents in personal development workflows
- Extensive familiarity with observability, telemetry, metrics, tracing, and production incident management
- Strong background in shipping internet-facing APIs with a focus on developer and client needs
- Reside within the United States for this fully remote position
