BELAY is seeking a full-time, remote Sales Tax Accountant to join its corporate team and manage multi-jurisdictional indirect tax reporting. This position reports directly to the Director of CFO and Accounting Services and involves preparing and filing state and local tax returns, monitoring regulatory updates, and resolving inquiries from taxing authorities. The person in this role will also work collaboratively with internal departments such as Finance, Accounting, Operations, and IT to maintain compliance and optimize automated tax systems.
This opportunity is well-suited for an organized accounting professional who possesses strong Microsoft Excel capabilities and experience handling state and local tax obligations. Candidates must reside within the United States, specifically in the Eastern or Central time zones, though applicants located in California, New York, Illinois, and Oregon are currently ineligible due to compliance considerations. While the position operates primarily in a remote capacity from a designated home office, occasional travel is necessary for business meetings and the annual company summit.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across various state and local jurisdictions
- Maintain necessary business licenses, tax permits, and sales tax registrations
- Track filing deadlines to guarantee precise and prompt tax remittances
- Analyze state and local sales tax laws, regulatory shifts, and business nexus requirements
- Review sales transactions for proper taxability and maintain valid exemption certificates
- Handle tax notices, assessments, and inquiries from taxing authorities
- Collaborate with Accounting, Finance, Operations, and IT teams to streamline tax determination, reporting accuracy, and ERP or automation tool integration
Requirements
- Experience preparing and filing multi-state sales and use tax returns
- Familiarity with tax compliance software and accounting systems
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and large dataset handling
- Capacity to research and interpret tax regulations while managing multiple deadlines
- Availability to work hours aligned with business needs and core collaboration periods from a dedicated home office
- Willingness to travel occasionally for business meetings and company events
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
- Prior background working with automated tax platforms like Avalara, Vertex, or Sovos
- Previous use of ERP systems including NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365, or SAP
- Experience participating in nexus analyses and supporting sales tax audits
