Gusto is looking for a Payment Operations Analyst to join its Money team in New York on a hybrid basis. Gusto serves over 500,000 small businesses nationwide by providing payroll, health insurance, 401(k), and HR solutions. In this role, you will oversee end-to-end payment workflows, manage exception handling, and collaborate across departments to improve system reliability. This position suits an analytical professional who can investigate single transactions, coordinate responses during outages, and partner closely with banking institutions and internal engineering and product teams.
As part of Gusto's operations, you will actively engage with AI tools to accelerate analysis, synthesize data, and handle routine tasks. The ideal candidate thrives in ambiguous environments, communicates effectively with technical and operational groups, and takes full ownership of payment lifecycle processes including ACH processing, refunds, and reconciliation. Working at Gusto requires a hybrid schedule with designated in-office days approximately two to three days per week.
Responsibilities
- Manage the operational layer of payment workflows such as ACH processing, exception handling, refunds, collection re-debits, and reconciliation
- Investigate payment discrepancies, escalate issues when necessary, and drive problems to full resolution
- Contribute to product specifications, highlight operational pain points, define requirements, and assist with product launches alongside Engineering and Product teams
- Analyze customer and customer experience feedback to identify and prioritize friction points in payment flows
- Coordinate with domestic and international bank and payment partners to triage issues and maintain professional relationships
- Utilize artificial intelligence as a daily tool for faster analysis, data synthesis, and routine task automation
Requirements
- At least three years of experience in payment operations, banking operations, treasury operations, or a related function at a financial institution or fintech
- Working knowledge of domestic payment rails including ACH, Nacha, wires, and RTP, or international money movement such as cross-border transfers and foreign exchange
- Experience utilizing bank portals, payment processors, or reconciliation tools
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to query or structure data to uncover patterns behind issues
- Clear communication abilities suited for both technical and operational audiences
- Comfort working within ambiguity and taking ownership without requiring perfect information
- Commitment to integrating artificial intelligence tools into daily workflows
Qualifications
- Experience spanning both domestic and international payment rails
- Familiarity with SQL for data querying
- Knowledge of compliance frameworks such as Nacha operating rules, unclaimed property, and money transmission
