Job Description

Vercel is seeking a Design Engineer to lead product design and frontend development for AI Gateway, a platform connecting applications and models through a single API key. Operating as the design owner for this product, the professional will collaborate closely with a Product Manager, engineering colleagues, and the wider design team to shape tools that handle routing, billing, observability, and security controls.

This position requires a practitioner who can move fluidly between visual interfaces, command-line workflows, and APIs. Responsibilities involve building production experiences across websites, dashboards, and CLIs, utilizing coding agents while taking full accountability for the shipped code. Candidates should have a background demonstrating shipped web applications, strong interaction craft, and the ability to make data-rich systems intuitive for advanced users.

Vercel operates with hybrid in-office anchor days on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday for employees within commuting distance of offices in San Francisco, New York, London, or Berlin, while offering fully remote arrangements for those located beyond those zones. The role offers equity, inclusive healthcare, flexible time off, equipment, and a work-from-home budget, with San Francisco base pay ranging from $208,000 to $312,000.

Responsibilities

  • Own product design and frontend implementation for the user journey from model discovery to production operations
  • Design and build production experiences across websites, dashboards, CLIs, and APIs
  • Simplify complex technical features such as routing, credentials, budgets, and performance metrics into extensible patterns
  • Engage directly with customers and analyze product data to inform design decisions and trade-offs
  • Maintain post-launch quality standards, encompassing accessibility, visual craft, performance, and instrumentation
  • Utilize coding agents for rapid exploration and implementation while testing and debugging the final output

Requirements

  • Demonstrated portfolio showing personally designed, built, shipped, and evaluated work
  • Experience building production-quality web applications using React and TypeScript
  • Strong visual and interaction craft capable of making data-rich products understandable
  • Ability to work across graphical interfaces, CLI workflows, and API behaviors while managing accessibility and performance
  • Competence in applying customer research and product data to drive decisions and communicate reasoning
  • Proficiency in utilizing coding agents daily while taking full responsibility for code testing and debugging

Qualifications

  • Experience with developer tools, infrastructure products, model marketplaces, or observability experiences
  • Familiarity with AI models, providers, inference platforms, guardrails, or AI application tooling
  • Background working with APIs, command-line tools, structured product content, or agent-facing interfaces
  • Previous experience building an application or agent with Vercel's AI SDK or AI Gateway

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation package including equity
