Job Description
Gusto is looking for a Data Scientist, Risk to join its team in San Francisco. The company builds a platform handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR to support over 500,000 small businesses nationwide. In this Staff-level equivalent role, you will leverage statistical inference, causal analysis, and experimentation to drive strategic choices and shape organizational success. You will dive deep into risk stack data, build risk models, and define metrics that track performance. The position requires you to collaborate closely with risk leaders across engineering, product, design, operations, identity, and compliance, while actively engaging with artificial intelligence tools such as Claude Code to enhance analytics.
This is a hybrid position based out of the San Francisco office, with an expectation to work on-site on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in data science, risk modeling, and cross-functional leadership, with a passion for helping small businesses thrive through data-driven storytelling.
Responsibilities
- Translate ambiguous stakeholder questions into testable analyses and structure complex business problems
- Build risk models and present recommendations for process and project enhancements
- Design and interpret experiments to define success metrics and measure impact
- Utilize AI-assisted practices and Claude Code to accelerate analysis and surface product performance drivers
- Own the end-to-end delivery of analyses and metrics for the assigned product area
Requirements
- 7 to 10 years of data science experience at a product-focused software company
- Direct background in Risk Data Science and risk modeling
- Strong SQL capabilities paired with comfort using Python
- Proven capability to apply statistical methods, causal inference, and experimental design to real business issues
- Demonstrated experience managing technically complex projects with clear business impact
