Coinbase is seeking an Associate General Counsel, Privacy to join its Privacy Legal team on a remote basis, reporting directly to the Managing General Counsel. In this position, the attorney will act as a principal legal advisor regarding privacy and data protection across global operations. The job sits at the intersection of data governance, product development, and regulatory strategy, requiring collaboration with engineering, security, product counsel, and privacy operations.

The role suits an experienced legal professional capable of handling complex cross-functional privacy programs, drafting critical agreements, and guiding teams through privacy-by-design principles. Coinbase operates as a remote-first organization, though employees meet periodically for quarterly in-person working sessions known as surges. The employer focuses on advancing economic freedom and expects a high-intensity work environment.

Key duties involve designing and scaling the global privacy program, leading cross-functional privacy initiatives, and guiding product teams on regulatory compliance. The attorney will also direct responses to privacy incidents and regulatory inquiries, and communicate directly with data protection authorities in EMEA and across the globe. Total compensation for this full-time role includes an annual base salary range of 195,700 EUR, alongside potential equity, bonuses, and standard health benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Scale and implement the global privacy program through policy creation, data protection agreements, and transparency reports.
  • Manage cross-functional privacy projects dealing with data governance, data protection tools, and data subject rights.
  • Collaborate with commercial and product counsel to embed privacy-by-design standards into new product launches.
  • Handle responses to law enforcement requests, regulatory inquiries, and privacy incidents alongside security and risk teams.
  • Engage with government agencies, privacy watchdogs, and data protection authorities globally and in the EMEA region.

Requirements

  • Possess at least 8 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Accumulate a minimum of 5 years of focused privacy experience, including in-house work at a financial services or technology company.
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of international and EU data protection laws including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, PIPEDA, LGPD, and state breach notification rules.
  • Show a proven history of managing complex privacy programs that require coordination across engineering, legal, product, security, and operations.
  • Have professional experience negotiating and drafting data protection agreements, vendor information security terms, and privacy policies.

Qualifications

  • Hold a Juris Doctor degree or international equivalent.
  • Maintain qualification as a lawyer in an EU jurisdiction, Ireland, or the UK.
