Job Description
Level Zero Health, a London-based startup backed by SOSV and Entrepreneur First, is developing next-generation biosensor technology for real-time monitoring of critical endocrine biomarkers. The company is currently hiring a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to guide the physical architecture of wearable medical hardware from initial concept stages through to volume production.
This hands-on position places the engineer directly alongside the founding team and a multidisciplinary group to tackle complex packaging, miniaturization, and human-centered design for body-worn products. Ideal candidates possess a strong background in biomedical or mechanical engineering with a history of bringing medical devices or consumer wearables to market.
Selected professionals will establish CAD practices, oversee supplier relationships, manage risk files, and drive robust manufacturing processes. This opportunity suits self-starters who thrive in fast-paced startup environments, value transparent communication, and want to influence human health technology.
Responsibilities
- Manage the mechanical architecture for wearable medical hardware across the entire product lifecycle
- Drive miniaturization and packaging efforts to integrate electronics and sensing into comfortable body-worn designs
- Establish engineering standards, drawing conventions, CAD practices, and design review procedures
- Design precision and injection-molded components from early concepts through production release
- Create architecture documentation and mechanical specifications while ensuring design history file traceability
- Conduct statistical tolerancing and tolerance analyses for critical assemblies
- Oversee risk management tasks including Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis
- Plan and execute verification and validation strategies encompassing drop, ingress, wear, and reliability testing
- Investigate mechanical failures to implement data-driven product improvements
- Coordinate human factors studies and usability evaluations focused on user wearability
- Select and supervise external contractors, tooling vendors, and component suppliers
Requirements
- Four or more years of professional industry experience in mechanical or biomedical engineering alongside a relevant Master's degree
- Demonstrated history of launching medical devices or consumer wearables into volume manufacturing
- Advanced proficiency in computer-aided design and drafting, covering complex surfacing and assemblies
- Extensive background in designing injection-molded plastic parts including insert molding and overmolding
- Experience performing statistical tolerance stack analyses
- Knowledge of designing leak-tight or sealed enclosures with appropriate testing methods
- Familiarity with standard assembly techniques such as ultrasonic welding, heat staking, and snap fits
- Experience applying structured risk management protocols aligned with ISO 14971
- Background working within ISO 13485 or comparable quality management systems
- Demonstrated ability to perform root cause investigations on complex mechanical failures
Qualifications
- Experience developing skin-adhered or continuously worn medical equipment like patch pumps or continuous glucose monitors
- Background designing microfluidics, pumps, valves, or alternative fluid-handling mechanisms
- Familiarity with IEC 60601, ISO 10993 biocompatibility standards, or IEC 62366 usability engineering
- Experience crafting precision insertion mechanisms or applicators
- Familiarity with sterilisation-compatible material selection
- Knowledge of Design of Experiments and statistical data analysis
- Exposure to structural, thermal, or fatigue finite element analysis
- Background utilizing rapid prototyping, machining, and 3D printing
- Prior experience working inside early-stage startup or small company environments
