Job Description
Robinhood is an enterprise working to democratize finance for all users. The organization is currently seeking a Senior Staff Software Developer for its Core Infrastructure team in Toronto, ON. This position requires working on-site at least three days each week.
In this role, the engineer will own the architectural evolution of three primary domains: compute platforms, infrastructure provisioning, and service mesh connectivity. The work focuses on designing foundational technology that powers global expansion, crypto operations, and continuous trading. Responsibilities include shaping technical direction across engineering groups, managing Kubernetes compute growth, transforming infrastructure provisioning into a self-service capability, and handling service mesh architecture end-to-end.
This opportunity is designed for experienced software engineers who possess deep technical expertise in Kubernetes internals, Istio, Envoy, and Terraform at scale. Candidates must be comfortable writing Go or Python for infrastructure tooling and driving cross-functional architectural changes. The position offers an opportunity to redesign underlying systems before complexity becomes permanent, supporting high performance within a fast-moving engineering organization.
Responsibilities
- Manage and evolve service mesh architecture by standardizing Istio and Envoy deployments for multi-region operations
- Drive the evolution of the Kubernetes compute platform, including cluster lifecycle and scheduling strategies
- Transform Terraform into a scalable, self-service platform capability for rapid region provisioning
- Diagnose and resolve deep technical issues at the Kubernetes API machinery, etcd, Envoy xDS, and Terraform provider layers
- Produce architecture proposals, direct design reviews, and establish technical direction across engineering teams
Requirements
- Deep, hands-on expertise with Kubernetes internals such as the API server and scheduler mechanics
- Working knowledge of Istio or Envoy at the source code level, including the xDS API protocol
- Wire-level understanding of HTTP/2 and gRPC regarding connection management and stream multiplexing
- Experience with Terraform at architectural scale including module design and multi-region provisioning
- Production-level coding skills in Go or Python for infrastructure tooling
- Proven capability to drive cross-functional architectural changes and influence large engineering organizations
Core Skills
Benefits
- Performance-driven compensation featuring equity ownership, bonuses, and multipliers for outsized impact
- Top-tier benefits including supplemental health insurance, ancillary insurance, and mental health support
- Access to market AI tools and continuous skill-building programs
- Employer-paid lifestyle wallet for wellness, childcare, and learning expenses
- Paid time off including holidays, sick leave, parental leave, and volunteer time off
- Monthly commuter stipend and catered office meals and events
