Job Description

Fastly is seeking a Senior SRE - Networks to join its Technical Operations team and help manage and expand a massive global edge cloud platform. The company operates an extensive infrastructure spanning six continents, supporting major digital platforms and media companies.

This role suits an experienced Site Reliability Engineer with a strong background in networking principles, internet architecture, and automation. The professional in this position will focus on building and operating global network footprints, responding to major traffic events, and driving reliability improvements across the platform.

The position requires working scheduled hours from 08:00 to 17:00 during core business hours, with occasional night and weekend availability needed for on-call duties. Employment is full-time on a hybrid schedule based in London, United Kingdom, or available on a remote basis, with potential travel requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, and expand the global network infrastructure of the Edge Cloud Platform
  • Lead responses to major traffic incidents, resolving edge cases and failure scenarios using IP routing and BGP expertise
  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code while participating in code reviews and process improvements
  • Partner in creating and iterating automation systems and tooling to improve network operations
  • Develop new performance monitoring methods centered on the end-user experience
  • Analyze performance analytics deeply and collaborate with partner teams to maintain network performance
  • Advocate for operational stability by working with engineering teams to influence product roadmaps
  • Mentor colleagues regarding the complexities of global routing in anycast-heavy environments

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience with global internet protocols and practices including TCP/IP, BGP, Anycast, and DNS
  • Coding and automation experience using languages such as Python
  • Familiarity with Tier 1 Internet service providers, Internet exchanges, and cloud providers
  • Ability to analyze multi-dimensional traffic patterns with flow-based tools
  • Experience utilizing visibility, alerting, and monitoring tools like Prometheus, Splunk, or Graphite and Grafana
  • Knowledge of cloud hosting platforms including AWS, GCP, and Azure
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, Ansible, Jenkins, and Git
  • Familiarity with network stack optimization and Linux or Unix systems administration
  • Ability to produce comprehensive documentation and collaborate across cross-functional teams

Qualifications

  • Experience writing production-level Go or VCL code
  • Background in network telemetry, including instrumenting infrastructure and managing data lifecycles
  • Previous remote work experience with geographically dispersed teams
