The company is currently hiring a Senior Software Engineer for the Cloud Networking team, specifically within the Network Service Discovery and Communication (SDC) group. This position centers on designing, building, and evolving foundational networking platforms for large-scale services.
This role suits experienced software engineers who want to solve complex infrastructural challenges within a fast-moving, high-performing environment. The team focuses on AWS, Amazon EKS, modern networking architectures, and robust service mesh deployments to support microservices securely and reliably.
Daily work involves setting technical strategy for multi-tenant and multi-cluster environments, managing service mesh topologies, and defining platform standards for APIs. Engineers on this team build automation and infrastructure as code to enhance developer productivity and system safety. Collaboration with security and application teams is vital to ensure zero-downtime migrations, strong encryption, and seamless traffic management.
The position is based out of the Bellevue office, requiring in-person attendance at least three days per week. Robinhood expects strong leadership from this senior position, including driving roadmaps, mentoring peers, and guiding complex projects from inception to completion.
Responsibilities
- Lead technical strategy and execution for platform networking, traffic management, and service-to-service communication across multi-tenant and multi-cluster EKS environments
- Design and operate resilient service mesh topologies utilizing Istio, including mTLS, traffic policies, ingress and egress rules, rate limiting, and observability
- Define and implement platform standards for HTTP/REST and gRPC APIs encompassing versioning, contract governance, and performance baselines
- Develop automation, tooling, and paved roads using Python and Go to improve developer productivity and release velocity
- Create and maintain Terraform-based Infrastructure as Code modules, pipelines, and guardrails
- Partner with security, networking, and application engineering groups to drive solutions for identity, encryption, zero-downtime migrations, and incident readiness
- Provide technical leadership by driving roadmaps, setting success metrics, de-risking projects, communicating tradeoffs, and mentoring senior engineers
Requirements
- Experience with AWS network communication fundamentals including VPCs, subnets, routing, security groups, load balancers, PrivateLink, NAT, and DNS
- Strong understanding of Kubernetes and AWS EKS operations at scale covering cluster lifecycles, node pools, autoscaling, admission control, and custom resource definitions
- Strong understanding of HTTP/REST and gRPC protocol fundamentals including performance, reliability, and backward compatibility
- Strong understanding of Istio service mesh
- Traffic communication troubleshooting skills spanning layers three through seven, including packet captures and debugging DNS, TLS, mutual TLS, and routing policies
- Proficiency in Python and Golang scripting and programming
- Experience with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code best practices
- Leadership skills to manage projects end-to-end from planning and execution to stakeholder alignment and communication
