Job Description

Extend is seeking a Senior Data Platform Engineer for its Enterprise Merchant Integrations team to help mature its merchant integration platform. Extend provides merchants with AI-driven post-purchase solutions, including automated customer service, returns management, fulfillment, and product protection combined with fraud detection. Operating from a downtown San Francisco headquarters, the company partners with over one thousand leading merchants across multiple industries.

In this role, you will design mapping systems, build onboarding tooling, create merchant-facing error reporting, engineer data boundaries, expand event-driven architectures, and take end-to-end ownership of system reliability while mentoring peers. The position blends solutions, data, and platform engineering using an AWS serverless stack and event-driven tools. This opportunity suits an experienced data or platform engineer with a strong background in AWS serverless technologies, Python, TypeScript, and large-scale data integrations.

Responsibilities

  • Design mapping and transformation systems to isolate merchant data uniqueness and build reusable platform capabilities.
  • Develop tooling and standards to accelerate partner team onboarding and support merchant migrations.
  • Build validation and processing error reporting frameworks for data providers and engineers.
  • Implement data validation, reconciliation, and automated failure-triage to prevent silent data loss and provide alerting.
  • Expand the event-driven production backbone utilizing Kafka, EventBridge, SNS, Step Functions, and SQS orchestration alongside lifecycle webhooks.
  • Manage work from initial design through production, incorporating monitoring, observability, data-quality checks, and reconciliation.
  • Establish integration standards and mentor team members by leading through example.

Requirements

  • Possess four to six years of professional experience in Platform Engineering, Data Engineering, or a closely related domain.
  • Bring deep practical experience with AWS serverless services including Lambda, DynamoDB, Glue, and Step Functions.
  • Demonstrate hands-on proficiency with event-driven systems like Kafka, EventBridge, and SNS.
  • Show fluency in both Python and TypeScript.
  • Have experience hardening large-scale data platforms and external data boundaries.
  • Demonstrate a history of building internal platforms and tooling designed for other engineers.

Qualifications

  • Experience designing clear and actionable error surfaces or reporting intended for external or non-technical audiences.

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Competitive annual salary ranging from $155,000 to $170,000.
  • Full medical, dental, and vision health benefits.
  • Stock options in a fast-growing startup.
  • Generous and flexible paid time off policy.
  • Participation in a 401(k) plan featuring financial guidance from Morgan Stanley.
